Some might argue that this should be step 1 but we will leave that for you to decide at the end of your experience.

If you decide to go with a center-stone diamond or a ring with side stones, you’ll have a lot of choices when it comes to choosing the shape of your diamonds or gemstones. Your choices include  Asscher Cut,  Cushion Cut,  Emerald Cut,  Heart Cut,  Marquise Cut,  Oval Cut,  Pear Cut, Princess Cut, Radiant Cut and of course, Round Cut.

While round diamonds are the most popular choice, many couples are also drawn to the distinctive look of non-round, or “fancy shaped” diamonds.  Each diamond shape has its own unique characteristics and is cut to different specifications, which impacts the overall look of the stone.  Which style you have chosen impacts greatly on the shape of stone that is suitable.

There are as many engagement ring styles as there are personalities in the world. How do you find the one that’s right for your bride-to-be? Start by narrowing down what her personality and style call for.

While an engagement ring is a symbol of your love for your fiancée, don’t forget that it is also a wearable piece of art. Consider what type of art would be the perfect complement to her daily wardrobe.

First you need to understand her style. Is she classic? Modern? Vintage inspired? Fashion forward? Once you’ve gotten that part down, your choices within that style are plentiful.

The first decision is based solely on color preference.  Observe the types of jewelry she currently wears and decide the best match.  You will want to understand if she has a specific choice of metal in mind so asking is always a good idea.  If this is a complete surprise and you can't ask, go with a color consistent with the tastes that she has already expressed.

Durability is another factor.  Platinum is the hardest metal and will withstand  the rigorous day to day activities of  active women..  Gold offers good strength, the choice between 14K and 18K determines just how strong.  Gold also comes in three color choices including traditional yellow, white and the growing in popularity color rose.

Antique, Vintage  and  Fine Jewelry

The first decision to make is  design related.  With so many options available it is imperative that you understand her tastes.

Friends and family will offer opinions ranging from a traditional solitaire  ring to a color gemstone surrounded by diamonds and everything in between.  Just know that the ring that you choose should be as unique and spectacular as your fiance herself...and it should be consistent with HER tastes.

Another consideration in choosing a style is her desire for a specific wedding band and how it will match her engagement ring.  Many women favor a specific style wedding band with which certain style engagement rings work well and others not so much.

Would she prefer prong setting in which a single diamond is set in a traditional, plain mounting, usually with four or six prongs?  Perhaps her tastes lend themselves better to a channel setting in which we set the stones right next to each other with no metal separating them?  She may love a Bezel setting in which a rim holds the stone.  Bezels can have straight edges, scalloped edges, or can be molded into any shape to accommodate the stone.  There is of course the elegance of a pave setting in which diamonds are set close together and close to the surface to enhance the center stone.

Buying a diamond engagement ring is nothing like any other purchase you’ve made. There are countless variables that affect beauty, quality and cost. It’s not like buying a car, where you get virtually the same thing every time, with a few options or add-ons. Every diamond is unique, and the ring in which the diamond is set presents countless options as well.  At Atlantic City Jewelry we take pride in the wide array of diamonds that we offer, literally thousands from which to choose, or we will go find the exact stone that you want.  Coupled with hundreds of setting styles from which to choose, the ultimate selection can be a bit overwhelming but don't worry, we hold your hand the entire way.

Many people focus first on diamond quality — the “grade” of a diamond based on the 4Cs of color, clarity, carat weight and cut — before they shop for style. The 4Cs were originally conceived as an educational tool to convey why a diamond cost so much. They’re valuable for understanding tradeoffs when buying a diamond within your budget.

But once your fiancée puts the ring on her finger, she isn’t going to go around showing people her “E color, VS1 clarity, 1.2-ct., thick-girdle” diamond ring. She’s going to show off her beautifully designed and brilliantly sparkling engagement ring.  That’s why we recommend focusing first on finding the perfect style for your fiancée — and then finding the right diamond to fit that style.  Consider the following options when considering the right engagement ring style.
